Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost?

Every chair is different and needs different degrees of help to bring it back to life.  We offer competitive services and our aim is to reduce waste and save pieces from landfill so we will work with you and your budget to make that happen as far as we can. Remember you're injecting your personality and investing in a piece which will last you another few decades.  It will be worth it!

What's the process?

A. Get in touch, send us as many photos as you can including underneath along with any ideas you have on fabrics.  We like to come and see complex and larger projects in person before estimating.  I love to chat in person but for the times when that's tricky we can speak over the phone or video call.  We'll then provide a written estimate.

B. Once an estimate is accepted we ask for a deposit to secure the booking.  At this point we work with you to confirm fabrics, trims and other details to personalise your piece.

C. We can help make arrangements to transport your piece to the workshop and home again with our trusted courier.

Every project is different but we will give you an estimated timescale of how long your piece will be in the workshop typically this ranges from 2-6 weeks.

Can I provide my own fabric?

We work with several well known fabric houses who supply upholstery weight fabric that is designed to be hard wearing and where applicable meet fire regulations.  Where clients seek to use their own fabric we want to be sure the fabric meets the same standards to ensure your piece stays looking great.  We can't accept responsibility for any problems with a client supplied fabric and charge a cutting fee for fabric not supplied by us.

Sustainability

We prefer using natural materials wherever possible from the inside out and continue to source and educate ourselves on suitable alternatives to products like foam.   Traditional upholstery uses wholly natural products coir (coconut fibre), hessian and scrim (linen) in its construction.  Modern construction can be adapted to work with rubberised coir/hair, a latex bound mat of coir and animal hair and wool felt instead of foam.  Just as comfy and you can feel smug about your chairs impact on the planet!  Ask us to make your chair greener!

Recover vs reupholstery?

Recover - refers to the process of stripping off the old covers and replacing with new covers.  Generally no structural alternations, replacement of fillings or shape alterations occur in a recover unless agreed with Stuhl in advance and these will be listed on the invoice in the job specification.

Reupholstery - refers to the process of stripping off the old covers AND the existing fillings, taking the piece back to the bare frame.  Generally reupholstery refers to a total rebuild of the piece from the frame upwards with new fillings and covers.

We don't replace all fillings on every project it very much depends on the quality of whats already there and discussion with you about comfort and longevity required.  Please specify during early discussions and the estimate stage your preferences.  In the event that some areas of repair are identified after the top cover is stripped off we will come back to you to provide options for repair before undertaking any work.
